Camelids in general have various genetic issues, or more accurately, health issues that many people believe are genetic in nature. The alpaca genome is being mapped, but until the actual etiology of many common and not so common conditions are known, the debate rages on what to do with animals born with these conditions. Here is some information I have come across in my seaches. NOTE: I am a school nurse, and have taken care of many children with both genetic and environmentally triggered health conditions. I might be right, or I might be wrong. But the fun is in the educational journey.
